Self-esteem is essential to living a healthy, fulfilling life. It’s the internal dialogue that guides how we view ourselves and how we interact with the world. Whether you’re looking to improve your self-esteem or help others build theirs, understanding the dynamics behind self-esteem is important.

Understanding Self-Esteem

What exactly is Self-esteem?  In essence, it is the value we place on ourselves. It’s a combination of self-worth, self-respect, and self-confidence. A minimum of average self-esteem means you have a positive view of yourself and believe in your ability to achieve your goals. While people with high self-esteem can gets stressed and even anxious, they usually have a sense of “I got this”, rather than “I can’t do it”.  Low self-esteem can lead to feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and a lack of confidence. It’s worth noticing that most people fall somewhere on the spectrum – no one is confident ALL of the time, and no one believes zero percent in themselves.

Why Self-Esteem Matters

Self-esteem impacts every aspect of our lives, from our relationships and careers to our mental and physical health. When we believe in ourselves, we’re more likely to take on challenges, pursue our passions, and bounce back from setbacks. Good self-esteem also makes it easier to maintain healthy relationships, as we’re less likely to tolerate mistreatment or engage in toxic behaviors.

Steps to Building Self-Esteem

  1. Practice Self-Compassion:
    • One of the first steps in building self-esteem is learning to be kind to yourself. We often criticize ourselves harshly for our mistakes or shortcomings. Instead, practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a good friend. Learn to let go of minor setbacks and/or perfection.
  2. Set Realistic Goals:
    • Setting and achieving goals is a powerful way to boost self-esteem. Start by setting small, achievable goals that align with your values and interests. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small, and use them as building blocks for larger accomplishments.
  3. Challenge Negative Self-Talk:
    • Negative self-talk is an internal dialogue that can have detrimental effects on your perception of self worth.  Pay attention to the words you are saying to yourself and challenge any negative thoughts that arise.   4. Surround Yourself with Positivity:
    • The people we spend time with can significantly impact our self-esteem. Surround yourself with supportive, positive individuals who uplift and encourage you. Limit time with those who drain your energy or belittle your efforts.
  5. Focus on Strengths:
    • Everyone has strengths and talents. Take time to identify your strengths and focus on them. Whether it’s a skill, personality trait, or experience, acknowledging your strengths can help reinforce a positive self-image. Writing things down has an extra positive impact; research has shown that people who write down and saying self-affirmations out loud every day for 30 days – even if they don’t fully believe it – have a more positive belief system compared to people than just occasionally tell themselves positive things.
  6. Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity:
    • Fear of failure can hold us back from pursuing our goals and dreams. Instead of fearing failure, embrace it as a learning opportunity. Every setback is a chance to grow, learn, and become more resilient.  Almost of all of the famous people in the words – Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, Michelle Obama, just to name a few – overcame adversity and setbacks before they reached their goals.
  7. Take Care of Your Body:
    • Physical health is closely linked to self-esteem. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep can improve your mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. When you feel good physically, it’s easier to feel good about yourself.
